Wireless use is on the rise

A 1999 LEMAS (Law Enforcement Management and Administrative Statistics) survey of over 13,000 general-purpose local police departments in the United States included some interesting statistics on computer use:

• From 1990 to 1999, the percentage of local police officers using field computers or terminals increased from 31% to 73%.
• More than half of local police officers worked in a department where at least some officers in the field could use in-field computers to retrieve information on suspects or driving records.
• Just under half of the officers were in departments where calls for service or criminal history records could be accessed.
